BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:50 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has made remarkable progress across Syria over the last 18 months, liberating a large chunk of the country from the so-called Islamic State (ISIS).
However, the Syrian military wasn’t the only group to make significant gains in the country; in fact, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces were also able to seize a large portion of the Deir Ezzor Governorate.
While the SDF did lose the Afrin region to the Turkish-backed rebels, the latter has conceded a substantial amount of territory to the Syrian government forces over the last two months.
The rebels now only possess a presence inside the Dara’a and Al-Quneitra governorates of southern Syria and the Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia, and Hama governorates of northern Syria.
