Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Washington’s intention to withdraw troops from Syria “will be a positive step,” while speaking at a press conference alongside his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Moscow on Wednesday.
“It will help stabilise the situation in this troubled region for the Syrian government, which is now under the control of Kurdish formations,” Putin said.
The Russia leader also noted that the “US troops are staying in the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic illegally.”
“There are no grounds in international legal law for them to stay there. There is no invitation from a legitimate government, nor a decision taken by the United Nations Security Council,” he added.
Putin also said Russia would host a trilateral summit alongside Turkey and Iran, with a location and approximate date already penned in which will need to be confirmed with Tehran.
