BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:15 A.M.) – The United States will refuse to provide reconstruction to Syria if Iran remains in the country, promised Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.
“If Syria doesn’t ensure the total withdraw of Iranian-backed troops, they will not receive one single dollar from the United States for reconstruction,” Pompeo told the Jewish Institute for National Security of America.
The speech also signalled a broadening of the official explanation for why the United States remains involved in Syria’s civil war.
“Defeating ISIS, which was once our primary focus continues to be our top priority. But it will now be joined by two other mutually reinforcing objectives,” clarified Pompeo.
“This includes a peaceful and political resolution to the Syrian conflict and the removal of all Iranian and Iranian-backed forces from Syria.”
