BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:10 A.M.) – “Neither Iran nor Saudi Arabia can be the hegemons of the region, that’s a fact. We need to realise and appreciate this fact however heart-breaking it may be,” Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said during his address to the US Council on Foreign Relations in New York City on Monday.
“In an attempt to be the strongest in the region, to exclude one-another from the region, we have managed to destroy the region,” he added as he highlighted Iran’s willingness to engage in “real transformational change” in the region.
Zarif also addressed the tensions in the lead up to the May 12 deadline by which US President Donald Trump either has to issue new waivers to suspend US sanctions against Iran or exit the nuclear accord, saying: “We experienced that during the nuclear discussions…there are no winners. Only the degree and amount of loss will be different.”
