BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:35 A.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) launched another massive assault on the Deir Ezzor Governorate this weekend, striking the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) defenses in-and-around the provincial capital of this desert province in eastern Syria.
ISIS began the second phase of their assault last night, when a large force of terrorists stormed the Syrian Arab Army’s defenses at the Damascus-Deir Ezzor Highway, Tal Brouk, Panorama Roundabout, and Thardeh Valley.
The terrorist group’s attack resulted in the capture of several points near the Panorama Roundabout and Deir Ezzor Cemetery, along with a big advance on the military airport.
According to a military source in Deir Ezzor, the Islamic State managed to cutoff the Syrian Arab Army’s main supply road to the military airport, forcing the Syrian and Russian air forces to enter the battle in order to forestall the terrorist group.
The military source added that Russian and Syrian jets are launching nonstop airstrikes at the moment, as the Syrian Arab Army attempts to recapture the territory they lost to the Islamic State last night.
ISIS is attempting to weaken the Syrian Arab Army in Deir Ezzor so that they can free-up their forces to send to more pressing fronts like east Aleppo and Al-Anbar in Iraq.
