French presidential hopeful, Marine Le Pen from the National Front political party, said that the Crimean people had chosen (via a referendum) to reunite with Russia, and their decision should be respected.

“Crimea was incorporated into Ukraine in 1954 by Nikita Khrushchev’s unilateral decision and without consultations with the people. However, two-thirds of its residents call themselves Russians. That’s why when they asked for their opinion, they quite naturally expressed their desire to join Russia,” she said in an interview with the Rzech Pospolita newspaper.

There should have been a referendum about the borders in several places BEFORE the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Especially where some old borders did not match the current ethnic composition of the people.

p.s. That way borders could have been adjusted without strife. But nobody thought of it then. And now local elites do not want it for power politics.

There was the referendum, that is why there was no strife in Ukraine – Ukrainian independence referendum, 1991. The strife began when Russia invaded Ukraine and started to kill people.

This wasn’t about the borders. Actually, Russia DIDN’T invaded Ukraine, it’s a total bias! The independence thing and pro-Russian Ukrainian govts simply made that Russia kept all her military bases in Crimea where 95% of population in… Russian! After Soros/DoS-backed Poroshenko’s coup d’état, he began to act very anti-Russian at killing people in Donbass… Then, a simple referendum in Crimea and you’re 100% sure of the results, you can put all UN observers you want, there’s no need to rig it! A Russian invasion would mean their militaries would enter Donbass which they don’t, thus, it’s clear that Donbass rebels… Read more »

There should have been referendum about current borders.
They do not coincide with ethnic boundaries of today.
That is the problem – and that is why Russia can interfere.

p.s. Yes to me it looks like the Russian rebels do the same as the US rebels in Syria. But DbSx thinks different.

Muhaha, if LePen’s Front National wasn’t borrowing money from Russian state-held-banks, as both are fascists, she’d back Poroshenko 😆 Thus, we’ll surely have soon to thank Putin to have done this : although there is more than enough to ban FN from French political scene for a long time, if we did so, on the next day, they’d found a new political party and go on spreading their stinky ideology. As FN and most of its leaders are already indicted for illegal funding of several former electoral campaigns and a foreign funding is very BADLY considered, there is already senate… Read more »
