Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia expects cooperation with Israel on Syria to continue, speaking in a meeting with Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel Isaac Herzog in Moscow on Monday.

“[We hope that] This cooperation would continue in the way which doesn’t endanger the lives of the Russian soldiers, doesn’t create problems for the effort of the Syrian Arab Republic supported by us and fighting terrorism,” he said.

“And of course in the way which ensures the security of Israel which we believe is very important for the overall settlement in this region,” Lavrov added.

Herzog on his part said that “We in Israel are worried about the fact that there is a clear violation of the border between us and Lebanon by Hezbollah.”

“I think the message has to be clear both to Iran and its agent Hezbollah, as well as to other agents of Iran,” the Israeli politician added.

Last week, the Russian Defence Ministry announced that the militaries of the two countries had discussed the operation of a direct communication channel between Khmeimim Air Base in Syria and the Israeli Air Force Command Centre to prevent dangerous incidents that threaten the lives of Russian and Israeli soldiers.

Coordination to prevent operational clashes is always good. Policy cooperation is another matter.
