BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:00 P.M.) – Forward units of the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have reached to within just several kilometers of the strategic city of Deir Ezzor according to the latest available reports being spread on social media.
Both pro-SDF and pro-government social media sources are claiming that today the SDF managed to wrest control of the 113th Brigade Base as well as the grain and cotton storage centers within the Deir Ezzor industrial area.
If these reports are true, then Kurdish-led forces are now less than five kilometers from Deir Ezzor city which sits on the western bank of the Euphrates River.
The main strategic objective of the SDF’s Deir Ezzor offensive has not yet been made clear by any official Coalition-linked or Kurdish YPG-linked media outlets and thus remains vague.
Late last night, ISIS announced that it had launched a counteroffensive against SDF units advancing towards the eastern bank of the Euphrates in Deir Ezzor. Since then, Islamic State-linked media has made several claims regarding the successful employment of car bomb attacks against Kurdish forces along the Deir Ezzor to Abu Kasab highway.
