BEIRUT, LEABNON (1:00 P.M.) – Turkish-led Islamist militants of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) has released footage captured by one of their drones showing Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) forces hurriedly vacating the village of Ayn Duknah under bombardment from rebel mortars and artillery.
Ayn Duknah, currently held by the YPG, has been subject to much contest between Kurdish forces and the Turkey-led militants over the last week as the latter attempts to seize the village from the former.
The Kurdish forces in the video can be seen vacating both in cars and on foot as rebel artillery peppers their positions.
Although there is no evidence to suggest that Turkey-led forces followed up their bombardment with a ground assault, the chances are that the YPG decided to withdraw from the village in order to minimize losses, regroup and place themselves in a better position to retake the village in a counter-attack should rebel forces storm the area.
The Turkey-led militants who desire to take Ayn Duknah have been shown to possess a range of formidable artillery systems, including medium and heavy mortars, 122-mm D-30 howitzers and improvised rocket throwers.
