BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:55 P.M.) – The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are within striking distance of the Islamic State’s second most important city in the Al-Raqqa Governorte after seizing the Tabaqa Military Airport this past weekend.

Backed by U.S. Coalition airstrikes, the Syrian Democratic Forces have managed to liberate a large chunk of Al-Raqqa’s western countryside, putting them in position to seize the Islamic State’s bastion of Tabaqa City.

According to the SDF’s official media wing, their forces are currently attacking the Islamic State-held town of Al-Safsafah, which is located just east of Tabaqa City – it will likely be liberated in the coming hours.

As of now, the Syrian Democratic Forces are within 2km of Tabaqa City, which is the closest any entity in this war has come to this Islamic State stronghold in western Al-Raqqa.
