BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:30 P.M.) – Russian President Vladimir Putin said the “Kurdish factor is the real factor in the situation in Syria,” during a speech at the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, in Beijing, Monday.

“Kurdish forces participate in the military operation against the so-called Islamic State, and they are one of the most combat-ready units, we consider it useful to maintain working contacts with them, at least to avoid possible confrontations and a situation that could carry a threat for our military personnel,” he explained.

“I really count on it [safe zones] to be an effective mechanism for the safekeeping of the ceasefire. During the current stage, it is the most important – to maintain, to safe-keep the ceasefire,” Putin added.

  1. Mr. putin right now the most important threat is US/saudi who are trying to divide syria by supporting terrriost one side and other side supporting FSa in sutheast of syria think that. US is playing innocent devil game in syria toghter with saudi and israel and turkey if Mr. putin dont get involved in this to save syria then they will loose last base in middle east and the war will come to your homeland russia.

  2. The Syrian government has legitimised the actions of the Kurdish militias. This can only be realpolitik, of course; in the sense of “we’re fine with them doing what they are doing”. Properly, the Kurds will be insurgents as long as they don’t put their forces under the high command of the legitimate Syrian army.
But it is good that Russia establishes ties to the Kurds and these ties may be essential. Because the Kurds know that the US is only using them and will drop them as soon as it, for whatever reason, needs to lure Turkey back into NATO. So the Kurds trust the Russians more, meaning that the latter could one day broker a deal between the government and the Kurds.
