BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:45 P.M.) – Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi stated during a press conference on Tuesday that the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights is Syrian territory.
“The Golan Heights are occupied Syrian territory. International law is clear on that. It has to be treated as such,” Safadi told reporters at his press conference.
“Therefore, our position is that Israel needs to withdraw from that territory in the framework of a peace agreement,” he added.
Safadi’s comments were in reference to Israel’s latest attempt to push the U.S. to recognize the occupied Golan Heights as Israeli territory.
Despite Syria’s suspension from the organization, the Arab League maintains that the Golan Heights is currently occupied by Israel.
The Arab League, along with UN resolutions 242 and 497, recognize the Golan Heights as Syrian territory.
