BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:30 P.M.) – The jihadist rebels attempted to attack the Syrian military’s S-300 system in the Hama Governorate town of Masyaf on Sunday evening.
According to a report from the Syrian military, the jihadist rebels fired several Grad missiles towards S-300 system placement in Masyaf, marking the first time that they have been targeted by an enemy force.
The military said the missiles ultimately missed their intended target, thanks in large part to their air defenses in the nearby Tartous Governorate.
On October 1st, 2018, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced its first delivery of the S-300 system to the Syrian Arab Republic.
This move by the Russian Ministry of Defense was conducted in response to the downing of their IL-20 reconnaissance plane near the Latakia coast on September 17th, 2018.
Though the Syrian air defenses shot down the reconnaissance plane, the Russian Ministry of Defense blamed Israel for using the IL-20 as cover during their bombardment of western Syria.
The September 17th incident caused some friction between Israel and Russia; however, they would settle their dispute after Israeli officials traveled to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
