BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:50 P.M.) – The Israeli Intelligence Minister Israel Katz told Reuters on Wednesday that his regime is pushing the Trump administration to recognize the occupied Golan Heights as Israeli territory.
According to Katz, recognizing the Golan Heights has been “topping the agenda” with the Trump administration, following their latest embassy move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
“This is the perfect time to make such a move. The most painful response you can give the Iranians is to recognize Israel’s Golan sovereignty – with an American statement, a presidential proclamation, enshrined (in law),” he said.
Reuters reached out to a White House official for a response to Katz’s claims; however, they declined to confirm any details.
“We meet with Israel on a wide range of issues,” the official told Reuters before declining to comment on the specific topic.
The Golan Heights was captured by Israel during the 1967 War and has been occupied since, despite U.N. Resolution 497 which recognizes the Golan Heights region as Syrian territory.
