The Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) have suffered a series of losses to the Syrian Arab Army’s 15th Brigade (5th Armored Division) over the last two weeks inside the strategic city of Sheikh Miskeen in the Dara’a Governorate’s northern countryside.
As a result of these losses in Sheikh Miskeen, the Islamist rebels have watched this strategic city go from firmly under their control to on the brink of falling to the Syrian Armed Forces.
However, they were finally able to forestall the Syrian Arab Army’s progress inside the city on Thursday, paving the way for a massive counter-assault by Jabhat Al-Nusra and the Free Syrian Army on Friday.
The Islamist rebels (primarily Jabhat Al-Nusra) were able to recapture over 20 buildings from the Syrian Arab Army’s 15th Brigade after a violent battle inside of Sheikh Miskeen on Friday afternoon.
Currently, Jabhat Al-Nusra and the Free Syrian Army’s “Southern Front Brigades” are on the offensive in Sheikh Miskeen; however, they still have a long way to go before they can clear the entire city from the Syrian Armed Forces.
For the Syrian Armed Forces, they will likely attempt to maintain their territorial gains in order to counter the Islamists in the future.
