During a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) offensive in northern Aleppo yesterday, rebels not only repelled the attack, but also captured a newly delivered Russian manufactured T-90 tank.

The heist was showcased on social media by Harakat Nour al-Din al-Zenki, an Islamist group operating in the Aleppo governorate.

Al-Masdar News investigated the claim with a military source embedded with the SAA’s Tiger Forces and can confirm the loss of one T-90 tank during yesterday’s battle.

According to the source, the tank suddenly malfunctioned, having suffered a complete power cut that rendered it useless. The tank crew then attempted to reboot the T-90 tank, but it failed to comply.

Subsequently, Syrian soldiers of the Tiger Forces dropped grenades into the tank and were forced to abandon it under heavy fire from insurgent positions.

The tank malfunction played a key role in obstructing yesterday’s offensive as it disrupted the Tiger Forces’ assault formation, forcing Major General Suheil al-Hassan to pull his troops back to their original positions on the outskirts of the Al-Mallah Farms.

Bad… Those aren’t regular jihadists, they are too well trained and equipped: it wouldn’t surprise me if there turn out to be Turkish Special Forces or israeli assesors with them… And they’re must surely receiving information fron US secret service…

Get infos on the new US F-35 fighter jet software failures, you’d understand that things can be much more worst than this and it’s the most expensive military program ever made : USAF and USMC have already +150 of these totally useless aircrafts which won’t be really operational until 2020 and some have already their airframes cracking…
Without the computer control, Harakat Nour al-My-a*s only captured a big metal shell with a motor…

yes, sit inside a metal shell on the front, unable to function because computer system is gone, nice one. SAA is not incompetent, more severly weakened by 5 years of war. if there is no point in holding a shitty village as it will result in more casualties, then withdrawing and coming back later is a preferable tactic. hopefully next time they return with air support.

Tanks can spearhead the battle but gunships can be beneficial as well.Yes gunships can be downed by aa guns manpads if they enter first naively but they can provide fire support securely behind attacking or defending tanks and infantry. Russian Mi 28 helis would be of good use in Aleppo.

It seems Aleppo will be soon ‘liberated’ by US backed rebels. The US & Israel always win, Russia always loses. Sad but true.

Obviously no grenades were dropped in this tank by SAA, or they were also duds which failed to do any damage, as the ‘rebels’ had it working perfectly in 5 minutes and were able to drive it off home. Here’s the video:

Oh, really? Why didn’t SAA just drive it back to base then, instead of gifting their best weapon, in working order, to the enemy?

I read the article but find its claims both illogical and contradicted by better evidence.

You assume the tank was not left intentionally for particular purposes.

FSA have requested kind Uncle Putin to send SAA some of his new T14 Armata tanks, as they would like to test drive those too:

To make it even worse, it was in clashes with the renowned elite “Tiger Forces”.

Which makes it even more interesting how they could abandon an intact and fully functional T90 just like that.

Read the article the tank broke down, they could not get it going, they dropped grenades in it and retreated. What I get from a lot of these battles is that the attacks take place with the minimum number of troops and if things go wrong, they have no reserves to back them up. Nor do they have enough troops to consolidate and hold the areas they take, which is why the counter attacks succeed so often. If the opposing forces can mass enough troops quickly enough, then they can succeed. The Russian Air Force plays a vital role in… Read more »

I would imagine that if your tank malfunctions in the middle of the battlefield you’re not just gonna stay in it and wait like sitting ducks for an ATGM to blow the h**l out of you, therefore it would have to be abandoned and the crew would retreat. If you are actually under heavy fire, like the way the Syrian soldiers claimed to be, then I would also imagine you may not have time to destroy the tank by lobbing grenades into it. I’m just saying if the situation happened the way they claim it did, then what I explained… Read more »
