DAMASCUS, SYRIA (2:30 P.M.) – Up to 15 Syrian Army soldiers were killed in an ambush executed by the Islamist rebels in Eastern Ghouta region as the government troops attempted to advance in longtime-rebel bastion.
According to rebel sources, a Syrian Army unit was storming Hawsh al-Dwahrah town when successfully ambushed by the Saudi-backed Jaysh al-Islam militants who used a network of tunnels to besiege and eventually terminate all the soldiers, as well as seizing their tank.
Following the battle, the Islamist rebels managed to hold Hawsh al-Dwahrah.
Yesterday, the government forces, supported by heavy airstrikes, succeeded in liberating several towns including al-Nashabiyah, al-Salihiyah and Tal Farzat.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey lavrov declared Jaysh al-Islam ‘a legitimate target‘ for the Syrian Army for being an ally for the internationally-designated terror group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.
