The Islamic State have just claimed control of al-Kafrah in a statement and are now moving towards Azaz.
These Northern Aleppo towns close to the Turkish border have been in control of the Army of Conquest, a coalition of opposition forces made up primarily of the terrorist groups Al-Nusra and Ahrar ash-Sham.
Azaz has been the site of intense Russian airstrikes since Turkey downed a Russian jet last week. The fall of Azaz would extend Islamic State’s control of bordering areas which allows greater access to smuggling routes for potential recruits and arms. Islamic State’s control of Azaz would also break the Army of Conquest’s supply routes to Aleppo city.
