DAMASCUS, SYRIA (10:50 P.M.) – A new wave of ISIS attacks targeted the isolated Deir Ezzor Airbase on Thursday as jihadist combattants tried to break into the city’s only airport.

Two large explosions, believed to be a suicide bombings, rocked the Liwaa Al-Ta’meen area (yellow circle on the map) near the airport while clashes were observed around the entire perimeter of the airfield, causing some concern for besieged Syrian troops.

As darkness settled over the beleaguered eastern city, initial reports suggested that the 104th Airborne Brigade of the Republican Guard was holding its ground and fending off the Islamic State onslaught. Nevertheless, the jihadist attacks continue as we speak.

Three days ago, a braggadocious Amaq Agency revealed that child soldiers had been deployed as suicide bombers by ISIS to combat the SAA in Deir Ezzor.

The intensified attacks on Deir Ezzor comes amid credible reports that the SAA will embark upon a major military campaign, ultimately looking to link the government mainland in western Syria with the besieged city of Deir Ezzor.

  1. The Saudi tyranny together with its major ally the US is giving the latest weaponry to ISIS including night vision equipment. However in this particular attack I suspect that the US marines undercover and wearing masks are involved. No one swallowed the excuse that the US military were in Syria for ISIS whichbthey themselves created. Deir Ezzur is essential for the US to link up the pipeline from Qatar into Iraq into Northern Syria. With the Syrian army in Deir Ezzur they are in their way. Thus this attack and other direct attacks like the one of kast year where more than 80 Syrian soldiers were murdered. Hopefully the Syrian army will fend off this attack and then seize the momentum to launch a decisive counter offensive to break the siege.

  2. The siege of Deir Ezzur is a pain in the ass. Difficult to find a solution to unsiege the city except from Palmyra front, which will be extremely costly due the long distances in the middle of the desert and surrounded by some unfriendly locals. One thing is sure, time is against SAA: each time ISIS looses an area in syria, it withdraws its troops to its heartlands in Syria, i.e. Deir Ezzur which increases ISIS power in that city. Same thing applies to ISIS in Iraq where it started withdrawing its troops from Iraq to Deir Ezzur and Al-Qaiim.

How is the Syrian government supplying the city now while its airport is out of service and not linked to the city anymore?
