BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:30 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) proved on Thursday that they were not ready to give-up the Deir Ezzor Governorate without a fight, as their forces launched a powerful offensive against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies in the western part of the province.
ISIS began the offensive, Thursday, by storming the Syrian Arab Army’s thin supply line along the strategic Deir Ezzor-Sukhnah Highway, seizing the town of Al-Shoulah that is located directly east of the provincial capital.
The terrorist group managed to take control of Al-Shoulah, forcing the Syrian Army to regroup outside the town in a bid to retake the territory they lost today.
Intense clashes are still ongoing along the Deir Ezzor-Sukhnah Highway tonight, with the Islamic State terrorists attempting to reach the strategic city of Al-Sukhnah.
According to the Syrian military, their forces have managed to obstruct the terrorist group’s advance to Sukhnah thus far; furthermore, reinforcements are arriving to help drive back the ISIS militants from the highway.
