US President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out troops from Syria will leave a vacuum which the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIL/ISIS) and Ankara will exploit to further their own causes, according to SDF spokesperson Mustafa Bali speaking in Kobane on Thursday.
“They [IS troops] will try to reorganize themselves and launch rebounding attacks,” said Bali who said the withdrawal decision had come as sudden and shocking even for US troops themselves.
Bali also raised the alarm for Ankara attempting to take advantage of the void to launch attacks on northern Syria and especially the Kurdish population to cause “a demographic change.”
“The same thing happened in Afrin, where more than four hundred thousand Kurdish citizens were displaced from Afrin, and where Turkish families and the families of the foreign terrorists were given residency,” claimed Bali.
On Wednesday, Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from Syria declaring that the US had defeated IS in a surprise statement filmed at the White House in Washington DC.
