BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:15 A.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) launched a surprise offensive in the eastern countryside of Homs, Monday, targeting the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions at the strategic city of Al-Sukhnah.

ISIS began the assault by detonating a car bomb at a Syrian Army checkpoint outside Al-Sukhnah, killing two soldiers as a result of the explosion.

Following the car bombing, the Islamic State militants attempted to infiltrate into Al-Sukhnah, but were soundly beaten by the Syrian Arab Army after a short battle.

According to a military source in the Homs Governorate, the Syrian Army eliminated most of the Islamic State militants after securing the city.

The remaining Islamic State terrorists that were not killed by the Syrian Army had slipped into the desert in order to evade capture.

ISIS has launched periodic attacks like this near Al-Sukhnah and Al-Qa’im, and while most of these infiltration attempts are foiled, the terrorist group does occasionally break into these cities to wreck havoc.
