The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched a powerful assault on the rebel stronghold of Mar’e last night, striking this northern Aleppo city from three different axes.
According to social media activists in support of the Syrian Opposition, ISIS stormed Mar’e after launching 3 VBIEDs (vehicle borne improvised explosive device) towards the rebel defenses.
Rebel media confirmed that ISIS is currently at the gates of Mar’e, despite the fact they lost over 20 combatants during their initial assault on the city.
Currently, the battle is still ongoing, as several hundred ISIS fighters continue their push at the gates of Mar’e.
The city of Mar’e is strategically located to the south of the Bab Al-Salamiyah border-crossing into Turkey; if captured, this will endanger the last rebel stronghold in northern Aleppo: ‘Azaz.
