The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched a powerful assault at the key rebel stronghold of Mar’e tonight, targeting the town’s eastern gates with a barrage of mortar shells and rockets in order to weaken the Free Syrian Army’s (FSA) fortifications.
According to the ISIS’ social media activists, the terrorist group is attempting to enter Mar’e from the eastern flank, despite the ongoing bombardment from the U.S. Air Force at this town in northern Aleppo.
No gains have been reported as of yet.
Should ISIS seize Mar’e, they will be in position to strike the last rebel stronghold in northern Aleppo: ‘Azaz.
‘Azaz is strategically located to the south of the Bab Al-Salamiyah border-crossing into the Turkish city of Gaziantep.
