The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed its fighters have shot down a Syrian Air Force MIG-23 in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor.

The group’s official social media account, Aamaq Agency, reported that the aircraft was downed near Thurdah Mountain. The pilot, identified as Maher Qash’our, was killed in the crash, it added.

Aamaq

Thurdah Mountain bears a strategic importance as it overlooks the city’s military airbase; the last stronghold for the government troops in the beleaguered eastern city.

ISIS’ repeated attempts to capture the Mountain has been, so far, repelled by the Army’s 104th Brigade of the Republican Guard.

Why does the plane in the picture have Israeli airforce insignia?

I’m thinking this photo is of one that was captured by Israel… The only other photo I can find with the star of David on a Syrian aircraft is that of a Syrian Air Force pilot’s aircraft who defected to Israel… I’m guessing this is when it was added by Israel to show this… As for the photo for this article, I have no idea why they are showing one with it…

So who provided them with Surface-to-air missile? Impose sanctions towards weapon supplier and proceed with lawsuit.

The ZSU-23-2 you see on mostly all technicals are basicly anti-aircraft guns with a 5km range… But you have to be especially trained in anti-aircraft warfare to use such babies. In fact, the usual way to use the ZSU-23 is ZSU-23-4 : 4 guns on a special turret with a radar. This is really dangerous for ow flying aircrafts although now disregarded in favour of ManPADS, in fact, ZSU-23-2 and ZSU-23-4 were mostly used in ground-to-ground in recent years : with around 1000rpm per gun, the “4” version is even more dangerous than the 20mm Vulcan Gatling gun on US… Read more »

Useless now they have the FOAB (and they already used it BTW!). Tactical nukes = huge pollution and fallouts. You know, even not considerinf the +4 billion years half life of uranium, caesium half life is 127 years, plutonium? 24,000 years… Don’t you think syrians have already enough suffered? They don’t really need their country becoming even uglier than the Chernobyl’s zone. Just look for pictures about nuclear birth defects. Some happened just by exposure to the vapourized depleted uranium used for anti-tank penetrators… Frankly, better avoid to use nukes, even small ones, especially when you’re Russia and have a… Read more »

They down nothing : the chopper was downed by a failure of the 3rd rocket you see it shoot! Just watch well the video! No incoming missile! Let’s say that it’s practical for russian public op bias : they just can be supportive about sending strategic bombers if a russian pilot was killed by the bigots 😉 If Daesh had ManPADS, they’d advertise it, you can bet if they had some anti-aircraft gun downing it, you’d see the whole scene… They’re like the nazis : they record anything. Until they have proof they have downed anything, I don’t believe their… Read more »
