A Syrian MIG-21 fighter jet was shot down in the eastern Syrian city of Deir Ezzor while on mission against ISIS militants.

Colonel pilot Ali Hamza was killed in the crash.

ISIS claimed responsibility for downing the Syrian aircraft via its official account on social media, Aamaq Agency.

According to reports, the MIG-21 was shot down by 23 mm anti-aircraft gun while pounding ISIS positions at relatively low altitude.

Yesterday, up to 80 Syrian soldiers were killed, dozens others injured in US airstrikes on Jabal al-Thurdeh, concurrently with a massive attack launched by the terror group on the same area.

The double barrel ZU-23-2 you see on many technicals is basicly an AA gun. The gear which shot down the biggest number of aircrafts since there are jets is not at all a missile system but this : http://precise3dmodeling.com/models/ground/images/shilka/demo_shilka_l.jpg A quadruple 23mm gun with a radar system, the ZSU-23-4 “Shilka” 4000 RPM… Max range : 7km and 5km ceiling but not really effective @+2,5km and 1.5km ceiling. And it’s simply devastating in infantry support : guns are water cooled. If flying low, you need a A-10 to be able to take hits from a 23mm and survive, even Su-25 id… Read more »

They should be flying high because of manpads and aa guns it is well known that all terrorist elements posess these weapons and rather than losing the jet it wont bomb and return. Can it be coalition aircraft that downed the jet? Which altitude it was hit and lost altitude according to radar data?

Military transponders don’t work on same freq as civilian ones (except if you switch them to) so you won’t see this on flyradar… And well, not even sure there are radar systems fielded around, nevertheless, ground radars are no good at detecting low flying aircrafts. Now, Daesh may perfectly talking total bullshit : if they don’t show the wreckage with impacts… Let’s be clear : a jetfighter, even if there are A2A combats is more subject to crash after a mechanical failure than to be downed, especially when it’s a single engine and it’s old and Mig-21s are very old.

“Soon after the collapse of the Soviet Union some of the vassal states were selling mig-21s to get some hard currency. I asked Dave Sutton (owner of Red Star Aviation) once how much he paid for his MiG-21. He said it cost about $50,000 to buy, $250,000 to make it fly able, and about $10,000 per hour to fly ” The Mig 21 burns at least 10,000 pounds of fuel per hour when operational. Even short flights take 1/4 to 1/2 hour burn 6000 pounds fuel or $2000 dollars fuel. Gravity bombs cost at least $1000 each and take 10-15… Read more »
