ISIS

Fajr Libya militia has launched a wide-scale offensive dubbed “Bunyan Marsous” against ISIS positions in Sirte. The military operation is backed by US airstrikes as well.

They really must lack pilots : generally, once you’re colonel, you stay grounded commanding an airbase then fly just enough to keep your pilot licence…

L-39 is a training/light strike aircraft. In LSA role, it’s nearly only effective for CAS (close air support) : it’s an old aircraft without all the stuff for identifying targets from far away. In other terms, you fly low and bust targets with the gun or unguided rockets (you see an UB-16-57 rocket pod on the picture), unfortunately, the L-39 is a very light plane, not an armoured flying tank like A-10 or Su-25, it has a single engine and CAS is done by flying very low (and slow), in other terms, you can perfectly be shot down by an… Read more »

@leithfadel Quite possibly one of the MANPAD’s that US/Hillary furnished to ISIS/Jihadists.

More likely a Sergeï (ZU-23-2) or a KPV, maybe even a Doushka, there are Shilkas (ZSU-23-4) around that are extremely dangerous, much more than ManPADS, if any aircraft enter their range. In fact, a very low flying aircraft doing CAS is very likely to be shot down even by a RPK or AK unless it is armoured like the old P-47 Thunderbolt or like A-10/Su-25. ManPADS are very overpraised, in fact, they shot down a lot of russian choppers and even some numbers of Su-22 but once russians mounted countermeasures on, the feast ended and talebans were destroyed in numbers… Read more »

The Daesh probably have some rather sophisticated anti-air weapons. Also, this is an L-39 Albatross, trainer jet of Czech origins, developed in the 1960s, and I would imagine the Libyan pilots aren’t very skilled.

Again : NOPE : 2 French Jaguars were downed over Chad with not a single “sophisticated anti-air weapons”. Jaguars flew much faster than L-39, had double engines, are very rugged aircrafts (India still use them!) and you won’t find anyone saying french pilots are not f*****g good trained. One of the two was even downed by AK/RPK fire! It made a low pass warn, well, all the Goukouni Ouedeï troop dumped magazines vertically, the plane was simply crippled… A third one was downed above Mauritania in 1978 but it was by a SA-7 Strela shot by Polisario Front. Well, no… Read more »
