BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:00 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army is rolling in the eastern countryside of the Aleppo Governorate, liberating another two villages from the Islamic State terrorists in southern Al-Bab.

According to a military source in east Aleppo, the Syrian Arab Army liberated the villages of Touman and Al-Mushayrifah after overrunning the Islamic State’s defenses tonight.

As a result of tonight’s advance, the Syrian Arab Army is now within 4km of Al-Bab’s southern gates, leaving ISIS wedged between their forces and the Turkish Army.

Led by the Tiger Forces, the Syrian Arab Army has liberated at least 25 villages since they launched their east Aleppo operations in early January of this year.

I hope they encircle Al-Bab first and not attack it without having it completely surrounded.

pretty though move, because… how can they surround al-Bab if the northern flank is held by Turkish-backed “moderate rebels”?

It’s in order to let the Turks+proxies take the hits while avoiding SAA to have losses 😉

The Daesh game plan for defending seems to be to let you roll up to the outskirts of the city they are defending and then put in all their defense once you get there. See Mosul, or the Turks going at al-Bab. Having said that though it is hard to think of many groups on the planet with as much battle experience as the Tigers. They will take al-Bab but it will get a lot harder once they get there.

No surprise : unless you have specialised troops in urban warfare, it’s one of the riskiest type of fight, well, even specialized troops take hits but if they’re not, they’ll get big losses. It’s always easier to defend an entrenched zone than to take it, thus it depends on other factors too : if there’s no population, only fighters and no high value things like world heritage sites and lotsa architechtural jewels, museums etc, well, just carpet bomb with FAB-5000s (Russian 5 tons bomb) and level everything… If there’s population, it differs : either you’re humane or if you’re like… Read more »
