DAMASCUS, SYRIA (4:30 P.M.) – Last night Syrian government forces launched a surprise attack against Islamic State militants in the east Hama pocket where scores of jihadists are now trapped.

According to a military source, Syrian Army troops raided al-Mahsah hilltop located to the north of the ISIS-held Aqirbat and fought fierce battles against the ultraconservative jihadist militants.

With the daybreak, army troops were in complete control of the hilltop and had also inflicting heavy casualties upon the terror group.

A complicated network of tunnels and trenches used by ISIS  fighters were uncovered in the process of the operation.

Having secured the hilltop, the Syrian forces are inching closer to encircle the strategic town of ‘Uqayribat from three axes.
