On Thursday afternoon, the so-called “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria” (ISIS) launched a massive attack on the strategic T4 (Tiyas) Military Airport in Homs eastern countryside striking the Syrian Arab Army’s defensive positions from three different sides simultaneously.

Violent clashes are currently ongoing at SAA’s checkpoints around the airbase with the militants’ onslaught being yet to dissipate. In addition to that, the terror group continues relentlessly shelling the airbase territory with ‘Grad’ missiles and artillery shells. A military source at T4 Airbase told Al-Masdar News that he had never witnessed such an intensive artillery fire by ISIS before.

So far, according to the same source, ISIS terrorists did not manage to make any progress, with 2-3 kilometers of buffer zone still separating their current positions from the airport’s perimeter. However, it is still too early to say whether their attack has failed or not, as heavy firefights are ongoing at this moment.

Supporting the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies from above are the Russian Aerospace Forces (RuAF) and the Syrian Arab Airforces (SyAAF), although they were not much active today, in comparison with previous days, due to harsh weather conditions in the area. Besides, when ISIS started shelling the airfield, SyAAF’s fighter jets had been suspended from taking off for safety reasons. However, according to the military source, attack helicopters are still able to carry out sorties from the airfield.

Finally, the military source has denied reports that claim that the airbase is completely besieged.

The picture above was taken by ISIS militants today from their positions in about 2 kilometers from the airport’s eastern perimeter.

Time to have at least one ‘Coot’ (Il-20) permanently loitering for ELINT purposes, an Il-80 for AGS (airborne ground surveillance : locates any vehicle) then a dozen of ‘Bears’ (Tu-95) with 60 KAB-250 guided bombs onboard then send some AN-124 to Damascus Intl airport with a shitload of KAB-250 onboard and 2 refuellers. So what’s behind such idea? 1. ELINT will locate all tactical radios, satphones, cellphones etc. 2. AGS will detect all the vehicles and very likely artillery, ground troops etc 3. Tu-95 can loiter for 18 hours and even 36 if not 54 hours with mid-air refuelling Having… Read more »

High wind in the desert = sand storm => nonetheless you have no visual but thermal imaging is also fucked. Such systems see through fog or huge smoke like in the case of idiots burning tires or oil-wells but flying sand really sucks.
The interest of SVP-24 is economical : being able to do precision air strikes with unguided bombs. Well, it’s a little less precise than PGMs but as Russian bombs are usually bigger (they begin @250-270kg… Westerners begin à 113kg then 227kg)…

“harsh weather conditions” could be bad for aircraft and not for daesh mobility. I do not see the point.
