US President Donald Trump claimed that the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) has lost nearly all of the land it once controlled in Syria and Iraq, while speaking at a meeting of 79 anti-IS coalition partners in Washington DC on Wednesday.
“Our coalition partners and the Syrian Democratic Forces have liberated virtually all of the territory previously held by ISIS in Syria and Iraq. It should be formally announced sometime probably next week that we will have 100 percent of the caliphate,” said Trump.
“But I want to wait for the official word. I don’t want to say it too early. Over the past two years we have retaken more than 20,000 square miles (51,799 square kilometres) of land,” he added.
Furthermore, Trump warned the coalition partners of ISIS remnants in the region, claiming they can be “very dangerous.”
“Rest assured we will do what it takes to defeat every ounce and every last person within the ISIS madness and defend our people from radical Islamic terrorism,” he vowed.
