BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:40 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) launched a counter-offensive in the western countryside of the Deir Ezzor Governorate, Monday, targeting the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions near the Sukhnah-Deir Ezzor Highway.
ISIS began the offensive by attacking the Syrian Army’s positions south of Al-Shoula, forcing the latter to close the Sukhnah-Deir Ezzor Highway for a short period time this morning.
However, despite the intensity of the attack, the Islamic State was unable to break-through the Syrian Army’s main line of defense near Al-Shoula.
According to a military report, the Syrian Army killed scores of terrorist combatants during the Islamic State assault, including several foreigners.
The ISIS offensive was an attempt to alleviate the pressure imposed on their forces in southwest Deir Ezzor; however, it would ultimately fail after several hours of fighting.
