A knife-wielding man attacked a group of civilians in a neighborhoods near the French capital, killing one and wounding four, according to the French police.
The so-called Islamic State took responsibility for the bloody attack, confirming that the assailant is ‘a soldier of the Islamic State’.
The assailant, whose name has not yet been released, was called ‘a terrorist’ by President Emmanuel Macron.
However, a French judicial official said that the suspect had been a naturalized French citizen who was born in 1997 in the Russian republic of Chechnya, and that his parents had been taken into custody for questioning.
The attack happened about 600 yards from the Palais Garnier, the home of the Paris Opera, on the right bank of the Seine, an area popular with both tourists and Parisians, especially on a Saturday night when the bars and restaurants there are often full until the early morning hours.
