BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:00 A.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIL) launched a desperate offensive in the Deir Ezzor Governorate on Tuesday,
striking the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) defenses around the imperative military airbase.
ISIL began the assault at approximately 5:00 P.M. (Damascus Time) on Tuesday by launching attacks along several axes southeast of the Deir Ezzor Airbase; this would result in a series of intense clashes that were would last for three hours.
Despite the intensity of the attack, the Islamic State failed to make any progress near the military airbase; instead, their assault ended in complete disaster, as dozens of fighters abandoned the front-lines after being overwhelmed by the Syrian Arab Army’s machine guns.
According to a military source in Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Arab Army killed or wounded more than 30 Islamic State fighters, while also destroying a VBIED (car bomb) and two pick-up trucks that were fitted with 23mm anti-aircraft machine guns near the Al-Ta’meen Brigade Base.
The Syrian and Russian air forces would also play an imperative role during the battle on Tuesday, as their constant airstrikes on the Islamic State’s supply lines from the Junayd Regiment obstructed the latter’s ability to resupply their front-lines.
