BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:20 A.M.) – The so-called Islamic State (ISIL) suffered a major setback in central Syria on Wednesday after their forces lost more than a dozen towns and several hilltops to the advancing Syrian Arab Army (SAA) troops in the eastern countryside of the Homs Governorate.
Backed by the 18th Tank Division, the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Legion launched a massive assault in eastern Homs, Wednesday, targeting the Islamic State’s last positions inside this large central Syria pocket.
According to a military source in Palmyra, the Syrian Arab Army liberated at least 14 towns and a half dozen hilltops, accumulating more than 90km2 of territory from the Islamic State terror organization on Wednesday.
Among the several identified areas liberated by the Syrian Army were the towns of Umm Rajm, Mazra’a Nizal, Shalilah, Al-Amoudiyah, Al-Hawyah, Rasm Al-Suwanneh, and Al-Alaf.
The Syrian Army will now attempt to close this last Islamic State pocket in the coming weeks, as they continue their field operations inside central Syria.
