BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:05 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIL) launched a powerful offensive in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor on Tuesday that targeted the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions around the strategic military airport.

ISIL began the assault by sending a wave of militants towards the Syrian Arab Army’s defenses at the provincial cemetery; this resulted in a fierce battle that would ensue for several hours on Tuesday.

Following a series of intense clashes at the provincal cemetery, the Islamic State militants were forced to withdraw their assault, as their casualty count was mounting with little progress on the ground to show for.

According to local activists, the Syrian Arab Army killed an estimated 35 terrorists on Tuesday, while also wounding 80 other militants that stormed their positions in Deir Ezzor.
