BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:40 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) liberated the Al-Sha’er Gas Fields in the northern countryside of Palmyra today after a 72 hour long battle with the Islamic State (ISIL) forces.

Led by their 5th Legion and 18th Tank Division, the Syrian Arab Army began this offensive in the Al-Sha’er Mountains on Monday morning; this would catch the Islamic State militants off-guard around the Palmyra countryside.

Within hours of launching their offensive, the Syrian Arab Army had liberated all of the hilltops overlooking the Al-Sha’er Gas Fields, including several strategic points that had been under ISIL’s control for a year.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Syrian Arab Army would finally take control of the Al-Sha’er Gas Company, paving the way for their units to enter the gas fields and force the Islamic State to withdraw from the area.
