DAMASCUS, SYRIA (7:30 P.M.) – A huge explosion could be heard in the western countryside of Aleppo on Friday as a military base belonging to Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham (Syrian Al-Qaeda branch) was targeted in what proved to be a car bomb attack.
The suicide bombing took place in the Rif Muhandseen Al-Than area, not far from Urum Al-Kubra town, and resulted in the death of 4 HTS fighters while a handful of militants sustained shrapnel injuries.
Although the bombing occured over 24 hours ago, no party has taken responsibility yet. However, this is the same region that witnessed infighting between HTS and its primary rival Ahrar Al-Sham, events which led to the defection of Harakat Nour Al-Deen Zenki a couple weeks ago.
ISIS is also known to have sleeper cells in the region while the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) intelligence apparatus, known as the mukhabarat, also operates behind enemy lines.
