BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:45 P.M.) – The Iraqi military has begun an imperative operation along the Syrian border to expel the so-called Islamic State (ISIL) from the Akashat area.
According to the Iraqi military commander, Lt. Gen. ‘Abdel-Amir Rasheed Yarallah, his forces launched the operation this morning in order to secure the vital highway that links the neighboring countries of Jordan and Syria.
Backed by the U.S. Coalition, the Iraqi Army and local tribes are attempting to liberate Akashat before beginning their long awaited operation to seize control of the Syrian-Iraqi border at Al-Qa’im.
No gains have been reported thus far.
