DAMASCUS, SYRIA (1:05 A.M.) – On Thursday, the Iraqi Armed Forces captured one of the largest underground ammunition storage bases abandoned by ISIS in the desert between Tal Afar and Mosul.

According to a source close to Al-Masdar News, the site was unearthed after bribing local informants on the whereabouts of such facilities in northern Iraq.

The ammunition base was likely hidden by ISIS to deter airstrikes from blowing up it up. On Wednesday, the Iraqi Army and Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) fully liberated the Badush region, cutting off ISIS militants in Mosul from storage bases west of the city.

Meanwhile, some gains were achieved inside Mosul city on Thursday as the Iraqi Federal Police and Rapid Response Units made substantial progress in the Bab Al-Tob area, liberating the Nineveh Private Hospital and Mosul Train Station, and few gains in the Old City.

The Old City neighborhood in western Mosul is composed of narrow streets where jihadist fighters are holed up in houses and darting through alleyways, resisting with sniper fire, suicide attacks and car bombs.

It is also the most populated residential area in all of Mosul. Effectively, the Old City district is unsuitable for armored vehicles and advances are often costly in terms of casualties.

In other news, a video emerged showing Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi’s cousin in the custody of Iraqi security forces. He was allegedly chief of the Islamic State’s prisons in Mosul:

Iraqi troops are also edging closer to the historic Al-Nouri mosque from where ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi declared a caliphate nearly three years ago.

Good find even if it was only rifle ammo. It will help to prevent IS going into guerrilla warfare.
