BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:05 P.M.) – Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-‘Abadi announced on Saturday afternoon that his nation has been freed from the Islamic State (IS).
In a swift operation that covered over 13,000 square kilometers, the Iraqi Armed Forces managed to rip through the Islamic State’s last defenses and liberate their entire border with Syria.
While they no longer control any ground in Iraq, the Islamic State is believed to possess several sleeper cells around the country, which requires the Iraqi counter-terrorism teams to remain alert.
IS began to wreck havoc in Iraq during their Summer 2014 campaign, which saw the terrorist group capture several important areas across the country, including Mosul and Al-Ramadi.
