BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:30 P.M.) – On Monday, the Iranian Navy revealed new details about the South Korean-flagged ship it stopped in the Gulf region, claiming that the vessel was polluting the environment.
The Iranian Fars Agency revealed on Monday that “the ship that was stopped by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the Gulf was heading from the port of Jubail in Saudi Arabia to South Korea and loaded with 7,200 tons of ethanol.”
For its part, the Iranian Tasnim agency said , “The detained foreign crew is from Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and Myanmar,” noting that the ship’s movement into Iranian territorial waters in Bandar Abbas was monitored.
Iran had announced earlier, today, the suspension of a ship flying the flag of South Korea, claiming that it pollutes the environment in the Gulf region.
An informed source in the Iranian Ports and Shipping Authority told Iranian state television, “A ship in the Persian Gulf flying the flag of South Korea was seized due to environmental pollution, and it was directed to an Iranian port to investigate the violation.”
No further details have been released by the Iranian authorities.
Earlier in the day, the Marine Traffic website showed that the South Korean vessel was en route to the United Arab Emirates, before it was redirected to the Bandar Abbas port in southern Iran.
