Iranian authorities have detained the crew of two US navy boats after forced to drift into Iranian territorial water.
According to the Pentagon, the two small vessels were sailing between Kuwait and Bahrain when a mechanical problem forced them to run aground on Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf.
The crew, 10 US navy sailors, were then held by Iranian authorities and taken to a nearby Revolutionary Guard base.
“We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly”, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said.
US Secretary of State, John Kerry personally contacted his Iranian counterpart, Mohammed Javad Zarif, to inquire about the unhappy incident which occurred while the former, along with Defense Secretary Ash Carter, was holding a meeting with senior Filipino officials at the State Department.
