With the lifting of sanctions in Iran looking, Tehran has labeled 227 products from the United States to be boycotted.
Ayatollah Khamemeneio wrote to President Hassan Rouhani in October warning that an “economy of resistance” needs to be made to counter the anticipated influx of American products to Iran.
The Trade Promotion Organization of Iran published the names of the goods that include chewing gum, cigarettes and appliances in addition to military equipment like tanks and armoured vehicles.
US food and beverages such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi have local bottlers and distributors in Iran, but they say they have nothing to do with the American brands. It is estimated that between 6-7 billion American made Marlboro cigarettes makes its way through illegal channels to Iran.
A senior official said recently Iran had launched a serious campaign to stem the flow of bootleg cigarettes.
