Footage released by UK Ministry of Defence show Royal Air Force Typhoon jets flying alongside two long-range Russian fighter jets as they flew above the North Sea near the United Kingdom’s airspace on Monday.
The UK Ministry of Defence said that RAF fighter jets from Scotland’s Lossiemouth airfield intercepted Russian Tupolev Tu-160s about 48 km (30 miles) from UK airspace and escorted them away.
The Russian Defence Ministry responded in a statement saying: “All flights by Russian aircraft are performed in strict accordance with international rules for using airspace without infringement on any countries’ borders.”
According to the Russian MoD, the duration of the flight exceeded 13 hours, during which crews of the strategical missile-carriers Tu-160 completed reloading in the air. The statement added that Russian airplanes were accompanied by Eurofighter Typhoon BBC and the F-16 of Belgium Air Military Force.
According to reports, this is not the first incident occurring between Russian and UK air forces. In September 2017, UK scrambled jets to monitor a pair of Russian planes approaching the country’s airspace.
