BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:40 P.M) – Israeli security forces deployed tear gas and water cannons against protesters in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Thursday, as demonstrations condemning US President Donald Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel a day earlier escalated.

Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday in a live televised address from Washington D.C. and started the process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv.

The decision caused an immediate outrage and fury from Palestinians, with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh calling for a “new intifada” against Israel.

Israel has always claimed Jerusalem as its capital while Palestinians demand that annexed East Jerusalem becomes the capital of a future Palestinian state.

  1. There is no legitimacy in Israel’s desire to claim Jerusalem as a state capital. Jerusalem was won by much blood of the Crusaders, who gave it into the keeping of Moslem Arabs. This is history. Read your history.
