BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:00 P.M.) – The Syrian government has allegedly allowed Qatar Airways to use their airspace this evening, Al-Arabia TV reported, as well as pro-government social media activists.
According to the reports, Qatar Airways was granted a rare pass to use Syria’s airspace despite the fact the country has no diplomatic relations with Damascus.
The small Gulf nation has arguably been one of the biggest backers of the Syrian opposition, as they have not only provided them political support, but also weapons to fight the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
Qatar was one of the first countries to cut off ties to Syria and they would later lead the group of nations that sought to suspend the government in Damascus from the Arab League.
However, despite their rift with Syria, Qatar maintains strong ties with Iran, who is one of the biggest supporters of the Syrian government.
Qatar and Iran have forged a strong political relationship amid Saudi Arabia’s ongoing dispute with Doha.
