BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:00 P.M.) – The U.S. Coalition’s command announced on Thursday that up to 400 Marines have arrived in northern Syria to begin an operation to capture Islamic State-held city of Raqqa.
The U.S. Marines are reportedly in the process of setting up an outpost in northern Al-Raqqa to help the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) seize the provincial capital from the Islamic State terror organization.
While U.S. military personnel have deployed to Syria before, Thursday marks the first time that the Marines have participated in this armed conflict.
No further details have been released at this time.
