BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:40 P.M.) – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is a big fan of President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
According to the Reuters News Agency, Pompeo claimed that the Trump administration’s decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights w3ould help resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by removing uncertainty.
“We believe this increases the likelihood that we get resolution of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians,” Pompeo told a congressional hearing.
“We think it speaks with the clarity that takes this away from any uncertainty about how we’ll proceed,” he added.
Trump’s decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights comes just weeks before the new Israeli elections.
The recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli territory is considered a major victory for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing charges related to corruption.
Syria, along with the Arab League and several other nations, has condemned the U.S. decision, which goes against U.N. resolutions 242 and 497.
Israel captured the Golan Heights and Sinai Peninsula (Egypt) during the Six-Day War of 1967; however, they would later hand back the Sinai Peninsula following the first Camp David Accords in 1978 that was held between Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.
