BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:00 P.M.) – Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in a televised speech on Friday that he is “not aware of the existence of a deal to release the Israeli agent Amer Al-Fakhoury. What we do know is that there is no deal and all that was raised is based on suspicion,” stressing that “the Amal Movement and Hezbollah did not inform them of this decision. ”
Sayyed Nasrallah said that “from the first moment of the decision to drop the charges against Fakhoury and release him, we got a wide campaign against the Shiite duo and this is what calls me to approach the issue from this angle.”
He said: “All that matters to the Americans is that Fakhoury is an American citizen even if he is a criminal. The Lebanese judiciary has withstood 6 months in the face of American threats. There have been many pressures on judges and there are judges who issued a travel ban and there are judges who submitted and issued a decision to release.”
He stressed that the threats were made directly to put some individuals on the list of sanctions, to stop aid to the Lebanese Army, to impose economic sanctions, and to prevent the countries of the world from providing aid to the Lebanese state.
The Hezbollah leader indicated that since the beginning of Fakhoury’s arrest six months ago, there had been heavy American pressure against the Lebanese state to solve this file in order to release him unconditionally.
He continued, saying: “We have always refused to drop the charges against Fakhoury, and we have always insisted on a fair ruling and our endeavor to issue the ruling in fairness to the oppressed or to a minimum, not to release him until the fair ruling was issued. We are not cowards, and we fear only God and trust the public helps us to present things.”
Sayyed Nasrallah pointed out that they were aware that no decision of this kind had been issued due to the coronavirus and administrative delay, but “when the decision was issued, I heard it from the media and called to inquire and said there is an ordinary session and what happened was done.”
In regards to why Hezbollah did not prevent Fakhoury from leaving, he said: “Was Hezbollah required to ambush the Lebanese Army and forces entrusted to protect Fakhoury? And should Hezbollah have shot down the plane that was carrying Fakhoury? Is this matter in the interest of the country and the government?”
He added that the U.S. does not dominate Lebanon, and the evidence is the presence of judges who did not yield to pressure and issued rulings.
